Almost two decades ago, Sony released its first MiniDisc player. It was heralded as the next big thing, the successor to the cassette Walkman.

Today Sony announced that it is ceasing production of MiniDisc players this September.

Not that the MiniDisc player wasn’t pretty dead before, but now it’s official. The devices never sold too well in the States, but did well overseas in places like Japan.

Interestingly, Sony will continue producing MiniDiscs, which can be used for re-writeable data storage.
