Hank Vigil, one of Microsoft’s top advisors, is leaving the company.

Kara Swisher reported the move first, and Microsoft has confirmed it.

Vigil has played a very interesting role — part dealmaker, part advisor to Ballmer and the executive team.

His official bio notes that he had a role in some of the company’s biggest partnerships in recent years, including Facebook and Nokia. Insiders say that he has also worked with big competitors who Microsoft also needs to partner with — companies like IBM and Cisco. He’s often a quiet figure at big industry events, particularly in Silicon Valley.

As a former Microsoft employee once put it, if Ballmer ever needed a suitcase full of cash delivered somewhere, he’d probably trust Vigil more than anybody else to do it.
