On August 18, 2011, Hewlett-Packard announced plans to spin off its PC business. In 2001, they paid $25 billion for Compaq. They are also giving up on WebOS. A year ago they paid $1.2 billion for Palm. It seems the company is getting out of the commodity hardware business and is focused on becoming a big data-focused software company.
