Rupert Murdoch’s iPad newspaper, The Daily, has 80,000 paying subscribers, according to publisher Greg Clayman, Michael Learmonth at Ad Age reports.

It has 40,000 readers doing the free trail, so it has 120,000 subscribers in total. To break even News Corp. needs 500,000 paying subscribers.

It’s not a great start for The Daily, which was launched in New York at big press conference with Apple executives on hand.

But, it’s only on one device, and it’s still figuring out the right mix of technology and reporting. The Daily is planning on expanding to other devices, including the Kindle Fire.

At the launch, Rupert Murdoch said The Daily would be a success when millions of people are reading. He also said it was expected to lose ~$60 million in year one.
