Police made 141 arrests after a New York City sting operation went down this week. Some of those arrested included merchants who knowingly bought stolen iPhones and iPads from the undercover cops.

Oops.

NBC New York reports that undercover officers went to the businesses with what they said were stolen iPhone 4s and iPad 2s. The store owners offered to buy the goods for $50 and $200.

The sting operation, which began on Tuesday, targeted some merchants who previously had a reputation of accepting stolen goods. According to a list, those places include convenience stores, barber shops, and even a pizza parlor.

The NYPD called this a “two-prong” approach to catch both the thieves who steal the electronics and the merchants who sell the stolen goods.

The New York Times recently reported a rise in iPhone thefts:

“The phone’s popularity is indisputable: During a single month last spring, five of the seven mobile phones stolen from subway riders in Manhattan’s First Precinct were Apple-made.”

No kidding. Even some NYC muggers are so picky that they refuse to steal Blackberries and Android.
