The first dedicated App.net client for iOS hits the App Store

September 1, 2012

The milestones in the quickly developing story of App.net keep coming. Today has seen the first dedicated client for iOS hit Apple’s App Store.

AppNet Rhino is a collaboration between two Croatian companies - Planet 1107, who coded the app, and Marko Prljic of TwinkleTap, who took on design duties. While it’s not the first iOS app to support App.net, social post scheduling app Buffer was updated to support the Twitter-like service, not designed from scratch.

Anecdotally, a number of other App.net apps have been submitted to Apple for approval, but AppNet Rhino has won the race to be first into consumers’ hands.

As you’d expect, the app features a home timeline, a mentions stream and access to the global feed. There’s not much else here in terms of features, and it feels a little less responsive than a competing app I’m beta testing ahead of release. Also, feeds occasionally fail to load within the app. So, there’s room for improvement, but the development team can celebrate helping Dalton Caldwell’s “audacious proposal” to another key point in its evolution.

Just yesterday, App.net rolled out annotations, allowing developers to attach metadata to posts on the service.

AppNet Rhino is a free download.
