Google and one of its manufacturing partners, Asus, are prepping to launch a new version of the Nexus 7 tablet with built-in 3G wireless networking, according to MoDaCo, a gadget blog.

That will mean Nexus users won’t need to find a Wi-Fi network or tether the device to their smartphone, making it far more useful on the go. But the new tablets will likely be more expensive than the current Nexus 7, which retails for $199.

Apple’s iPad tablet line already offers 3G networking as an option. The Nexus 7 has a smaller, 7-inch screen. Apple is expected to match its size with an upcoming tablet model.

Analysts expect the Wi-Fi-only Nexus 7 model to sell 8 million units this year.
