Amazon is definitely working on a smartphone, and it could be announced as early as tomorrow at the company’s Kindle event in Los Angeles, reports Nilay Patel of The Verge.

An Amazon representative would not comment on the report.

Amazon’s phone is said to run an altered version of Android, just like the Kindle Fire tablet. It’ll also use Nokia’s mapping application instead of Google Maps. This seems a bit odd to us as Amazon recently purchased a 3D mapping company called UpNext. However, it’s possible Amazon will only want to use Nokia’s mapping data and build the app itself.

Patel says the smartphone isn’t finished yet, so there’s still a chance Amazon won’t unveil it at the event tomorrow. But the device definitely appears to be in the works. We’ll know for sure tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, check out the Nokia’s new Lumia 920 Windows Phone, which was just announced today
