Windows 8′s ‘browser ballot’ screen making its way into the market via update KB976002

September 5, 2012

The browser ballot screen is back. Update ‘KB976002′ for Windows 8 brings the option to the operating system. As you recall, due to a legal scuffle with the European Union, Microsoft, in certain markets, provides new users of Windows with an option to select the browser of their choice.

NeoWin, a publication that focuses on Microsoft and its various products, secured a screenshot of the Windows 8 ballot screen:

For reference, here’s what Microsoft put together for Windows 7, via its official post:

According to Microsoft, the purpose of the ballot is to “inform customers who currently use Internet Explorer as their default browser that there are other web browser choices available.”

Will this affect you? Only if you reside in the following countries:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland.

This move is hardly unexpected, but it is nice to see what tens of millions of users will be shown when the browser menu is presented to them. If you are running Windows 8, this should arrive via Windows Update soon.

Windows 8 is now less than two months from ‘general availability,’ so expect Microsoft to continue tidying up the software for its day in the sun.
