Just like how LA’s emergence in the startup community helps solidify The Valley as the nucleus of the startup world, growth around NY’s center, Manhattan, is extremely important for the health and vitality of The Big Apple.
We’ve seen quite a lot change in NY over the past year, and as Manhattan excels, prices go up and office space dwindles. This is exactly why Brooklyn became such a hot spot, hosting companies like Etsy, Huge and Makerbot. But even there, especially in places like DUMBO, the tech scene is outgrowing its trendy neighborhoods. Because of this, unexpected areas are starting to get some much-needed love from the tech scene, like the Bronx, Queens and Harlem.
This sort of expansion, so long as we’re not spread too thin, is a very good thing, and now we’re seeing yet another unexpected sign of growth: Long Island is getting a new tech startup accelerator.
As NYConvergence reports, Long Island accelerator, “LI Tech COMETS,” has recently started accepting applications for its 6 month program. Founded by LI Software and Tech Network, this program will kick off with a slim 3 LI-based tech startups, which will each be granted a $50,000 “build your business package.”
This program may be best suited for B2B or enterprise-facing startups, but it’s still worth your attention even if you’re focused on consumer-facing tech. LI Tech COMETS is one of many strong pushes to bring growth and development into the areas outside of Manhattan and even NYC — moves like this only fortify the area, providing different kinds of living experiences for new and existing NY talent.
