“Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction,” goes the saying. And if it’s a headline in The Onion, that line between truth and fiction, in all its glorious and hilarious strangeness, is often blurred – so much so that a new Tumblr website, Literally Unbelievable,” has taken to collecting responses to the stories from those who can’t quite discern the difference.
Is this a function of the Internet and new media? Or is it simply a matter of what it means to be human (what it means to be gullible, what it means to have a sense of humor – you decide).
The Onion’s Digital Director Baratunde Thurston is speaking today at ReadWriteWeb’s 2Way Summit on “Creative Exploitation of Social Media from the Swine Flu to The Onion.”
Tune in at 1:45 EST for Thurston’s keynote, which we’ll be livestreaming here.
